Stories from the outside Inn came from an idea I had when driving home from my Leeds therapy clinic listening to BBC Radio 4. The presenter was talking about a new book that was about to be published called “Not quite what I was planning”. This collection of writings consisted of a series of 6 word memoirs from a wide range of people.

From Hemingway and Six Words a Training Course is Born

In 2006, “SMITH” Magazine decided to give people the opportunity to answer a Hemingway inspired challenge: What would a six-word memoir look like? Within weeks, submissions came in by the thousands and contributors ranged from Joan Rivers to Dave Eggers, Deepak Chopra to Moby. Most of the contributions, however, came from amateur writers.

Examples include:

Aimee Mann: “Couldn’t cope so I wrote songs.”
Joyce Carol Oates: “Revenge is living well, without you.”
Joan Rivers: “Liars, hysterectomy didn’t improve sex life!”

I thought to myself “I wonder if Doug and I could do an event on storytelling, using some of these ideas?” and Stories from the Outside Inn began to take shape. I had always wanted to run an event with Doug, who is a well respected Trainer and coach in Ericksonian Hypnosis and NLP.

I wanted to do something more than the traditional NLP and Hypnosis events we had both run for years. As we began to discuss the content of the event it became clear to us both that this would be a very different event. It would be one that would be relevant for a wide range of people from business folks, therapists, authors, singers, teachers, performance artists and basically anyone who wanted to improve their presentation and overall communication skills in a lively interactive workshop.

The first event was ran in the UK in 2009 and since then the material taught has evolved and refined further into highly useful skills to develop creativity and leadership. Many who attend this event request returning to future events as they find it so useful in their personal and professional life!
